I'm not photogenic. Is this really for me?

16 June 2026 · 4 min read

Black-and-white portrait of a woman in a crisp white shirt seated on a stool at Body & Soul Studios, London.

Of everything women say to us before they book, this is the one we hear most. Sometimes it arrives as a confession, sometimes as a warning, almost always with a small laugh to soften it. I should tell you now, I'm just not photogenic.

We hear you. And we'd like to gently disagree.

What "not photogenic" usually means

When a woman tells us she doesn't photograph well, she is rarely describing her face. She is describing an experience. A phone held at the wrong angle in unflattering light. A wedding where nobody told her what to do with her hands. A passport photo. A candid someone posted without asking. A camera pointed at her in a moment she didn't choose, with no styling, no direction and no warmth behind the lens.

That is not evidence that you are not photogenic. That is evidence that you have never been photographed properly. There is a world of difference, and it is the entire reason this studio exists.

"Photogenic" is treated like a fixed trait, something you either have or you don't. In our experience it is almost always made of four things you have simply never been given at the same time:

- Styling that suits your colouring, your shape and the woman you actually are - Light shaped to flatter rather than expose - Direction in every single frame, so you are never left guessing - Time and warmth, so your shoulders drop and your real face arrives

Give a woman all four, and "not photogenic" quietly disappears. We have watched it happen hundreds of times.

You are not meant to know what to do

Here is the belief we'd most love to lift off your shoulders: the idea that a good portrait depends on you already knowing how to pose, how to angle, how to be in front of a camera. It does not. That is our job, and we take it seriously.

From the moment you arrive, you are guided.

- Styling comes first. Hair and make-up are done by our team, and we plan your looks with you so you feel considered, not exposed. - You are directed in every frame. Not "just be natural", which is the least helpful instruction in the world. Real, specific, kind direction: where to look, how to turn, when to breathe, what to think about. The chin, the hands, the weight on the back foot. We carry all of it so you don't have to. - We work at an unhurried pace. There is no clock being tapped, no sense that you are using up someone's patience. The early frames are simply where you warm up, and we expect that. By the middle of the session, you have forgotten the camera is there.

You do not need to perform. You only need to show up and trust the people in the room with you.

The reveal is the proof

This is the part that tends to undo the "I'm not photogenic" story for good. A few days later, over Zoom, you sit down with us and see your images, beautifully presented, full size, together.

We watch the same thing happen again and again. A woman who arrived certain she would hate every frame goes quiet, then a little tearful, then says some version of: I didn't know I could look like that. You did. You always could. You had simply never seen yourself shaped by people whose only job that day was to capture you at your best.

So, is this really for you?

Yes. In fact, the women who tell us they aren't photogenic are very often the ones who are most moved by the result, precisely because the gap between what they expected and what they see is so wide.

This is not luck, and it is not a trick of editing. It is a craft: the right styling, the right light, real direction, an unhurried room and a team that has done this for thousands of women. A beautiful portrait of you is not a happy accident we are hoping for. It is what the whole process is built to make certain.
